Background

Large workpieces of greater than 1 cubic meter in size require long, time-consuming, and costly alignment processes. The alignment frequently takes longer than the actual machining process.

 

Solution

The patented VSET technology is a visual, automated system for measuring and aligning raw parts. The application is simple, the time savings are enormous.

VSET is based on three main modules namely measuring, best fit, and alignment. The modules can be used independently of each other. The geometry of the workpiece is measured “outside” the machine using a specially developed photogrammetry technology. To calculate the best fit, the geometry of the raw part is compared with the 3D data and, at the same time, an allowance check is carried out to ensure the quality of the raw part. The software additionally generates a clamping plan of the workpiece including detailed information regarding a reference point for the machine operator. These reference points are automatically probed by the machine using a touch probe.
